Haunted Heist Controls: Heister and Trickster Guide

Learn the Actions Before the Mansion Gets Loud

A gem run gets messy fast when you reach for a weapon and accidentally grab something instead. Learning Haunted Heist controls helps you keep collecting, defending, and communicating when a Trickster interrupts your escape. Get comfortable with Haunted Heist controls for both roles, because carrying treasure and hunting its carrier demand different habits.

Haunted Heist is a round-based horror party game for 3–8 players. Heisters search a procedurally generated mansion for gems and return them to their safe room before time runs out. Tricksters work against them with attacks, deception, and abilities that disrupt communication.

Your objective changes how you use your controls. A Heister needs to move between collecting, fighting, navigating, and helping teammates. A Trickster needs to choose an ability, time its activation, and follow through while opponents are distracted.

RoleObjectiveActions to learn
HeisterCollect gems and return them to the safe roomPickup interactions, equipment use, shooting, and reviving
TricksterPrevent the Heisters from completing their objectiveAttacks, disguises, invisibility, and voice abilities
Both teamsCoordinate through a chaotic roundMovement, camera control, and voice communication

Practice identifying the action you need before committing to it. When treasure, equipment, and danger compete for your attention, deliberate inputs help prevent a pickup from interrupting your response to an attacker.

Treat learning Haunted Heist controls as part of learning your role. The important question is whether you can reach the action you need while keeping track of your teammates and surroundings.

Heister Controls: Gems, Equipment, and Revives

Heisters win by bringing gems home. Combat supports that objective, but chasing a Trickster through the mansion can pull you away from treasure, teammates, and the return route.

Build your habits around the complete gem run: locate treasure, collect it, keep the group moving, and return it to the safe room. The mansion’s layout changes between rounds, so memorizing a previous route cannot replace paying attention to the current one.

Keep Pickup Interactions Deliberate

Accidental pickups can interfere with an urgent response. Before interacting with something, look at what you are trying to collect and decide whether the immediate situation gives you room to do it.

If a Trickster is attacking nearby, call out the threat before focusing on loot. Ask a teammate to watch the approach while you collect the gem, then move together.

Avoid turning every discovered item into a detour. Keep the objective in view, especially when the group already has treasure to bring back.

Learn Your Equipment as Separate Actions

Heisters have handguns, flashlights, flares, and defibrillators. Their survival also depends on managing ammunition and battery resources. Powerups can replenish resources, improve equipment, or help with navigation.

Equipment or resourceFunctionPractice habit
HandgunDefend against threatsAim deliberately and conserve ammunition
FlashlightHelp you see through the mansionMonitor your battery while exploring
FlaresProvide another lighting toolLearn their use alongside your flashlight
DefibrillatorRevive fallen playersIdentify your revive action before a teammate needs help
PowerupsRestore resources, enhance equipment, or assist navigationCheck what you collect and communicate useful finds

Learn equipment use separately from pickup interactions. During a scramble, you want to know whether you are collecting an object, using a tool, or preparing to shoot.

Spend attention on the resource attached to your next action. A weapon with no ammunition cannot cover a teammate, and battery management matters when the group is still searching dark corridors.

Prepare for Revives Before Someone Falls

Defibrillators make reviving part of the Heister toolkit. Get familiar with using them before a rescue becomes urgent.

Coordinate the attempt: ask a teammate to watch for the Trickster while you focus on the fallen player. Keep calling out nearby threats so everyone knows whether the rescue is under pressure.

After the revive, regroup and reassess the gem run. Resist the urge to scatter immediately after recovering a teammate; the same opponent can still be nearby.

For Heisters, Haunted Heist controls become easier to manage when you connect each action to a clear purpose: collect, defend, illuminate, revive, or return.

Movement and Combat: Stay Oriented Under Pressure

The mansion is procedurally generated, and rounds have a time limit. Getting lost costs time that the Heisters need for collecting and returning gems.

Pay attention to your route as you explore. Use recognizable rooms, corridors, and nearby landmarks in your callouts. “Behind the large gravestone” gives a teammate more direction than repeatedly shouting “over here.”

Keep the return journey in mind while moving deeper into the building. Before leaving your group to investigate another area, tell them where you are going.

Check More Than the Hallway Ahead

Threats can appear above you as well as along your immediate path. Keep your camera work broad enough to check elevated positions when you hear danger.

Avoid fixing your attention on one doorway while an opponent changes position. Turn toward useful callouts and scan the surrounding space before firing.

Jumping also deserves deliberate practice around ladders. Jumping while on a ladder can launch you away from it, so avoid tapping jump automatically during a climb. Learn the movement before relying on it during a chase.

Stop Panic Firing From Emptying Your Weapon

Ammunition is limited. Firing repeatedly at a confusing movement or an unclear target can leave you unable to respond when the Trickster closes in.

Use these habits during an encounter:

  • Locate the threat before firing.
  • Call out its position so teammates can turn toward it.
  • Check your remaining ammunition before volunteering to cover someone.
  • Regroup when a fight pulls the team away from its gem run.
  • Keep moving toward the objective once the immediate threat is handled.

Choose a camera sensitivity that lets you turn toward danger without repeatedly overshooting your target. Make small adjustments, then practice looking between nearby landmarks before changing it again.

Haunted Heist controls need to support both quick reactions and careful interaction. Practice switching your attention between the threat, your equipment, and the route home.

Trickster Controls: Time Your Abilities and Deception

Tricksters can use night vision, invisibility, disguises, player muting, voice swapping, and voice modulation. Their abilities operate on cooldowns, making timing a central part of the role.

Learn what each ability accomplishes before trying to combine several under pressure. An ability that hides you serves a different purpose from one that disrupts a team’s conversation.

Night visionHelps you see in darknessUse it to track movement through dark areas
InvisibilityConceals your presencePlan your positioning before activating it
DisguiseLets you impersonate a HeisterWatch the group’s behavior before approaching

Give Each Ability a Purpose

Watch for moments when Heisters must divide their attention: collecting a gem, navigating a junction, fighting, or attempting a revive.

Time your disruption around those demands. Muting a player during coordination creates a different problem from becoming invisible near a distracted group.

Pay attention to cooldowns before committing to an ambush. Plan which action follows your opening ability so you are ready to continue when that ability becomes unavailable.

Use Disguises With Attention to the Group

Disguises and voice manipulation can make familiar appearances and voices misleading. Watch how Heisters travel together, where they are heading, and what they are discussing.

Approach with that behavior in mind. Coordinate your movement and voice ability rather than rushing into the middle of a group without a plan.

For Heisters facing this deception, compare what someone says with where they are and what they are doing. Ask teammates to describe their location and immediate objective when a familiar voice becomes confusing.

Learning Haunted Heist controls on the Trickster side means learning timing as much as execution. Know the ability you want, the moment you want to use it, and the action that follows.

Controller, Steam Deck, and Voice Setup

Haunted Heist supports controllers, including DualShock and DualSense devices. It is also planned for Windows and macOS, with an October 12, 2026 release.

Pick the input device that feels comfortable for camera movement and equipment use. Spend time learning both roles on that device, since Heister tools and Trickster abilities place different demands on your hands.

Steam Deck Play

On Steam Deck, Haunted Heist runs through Proton. Performance at default settings is described as being in the 30–60 FPS range.

Start with those default settings while learning movement and camera handling. Practice pickup interactions, aiming, and equipment use before adding the pressure of an unfamiliar role.

Keep voice chat in your setup routine, too. Communication matters whether you are playing at a desk or on a handheld.

Get Your Microphone Ready

In-game microphone selection was introduced in Demo Update v1.1.0. Select the microphone you intend to use and check that nearby teammates can hear you.

Proximity chat makes staying close part of communication. Tricksters can also mute players and manipulate voices, so sudden silence or a familiar voice can become part of the encounter.

Test ordinary conversation before the round gets chaotic. During play, use short, specific callouts: the threat’s location, your ammunition situation, or your intended route.

Before heading out, review Haunted Heist controls for the actions your role depends on. Make sure you can collect or activate deliberately, turn toward a threat, and communicate while moving.
